Pompidou Center eyes Busan outpost by 2030; Seoul branch set for next year
The French Embassy in Korea said Thursday discussions are under way to open a Pompidou Center branch in the southeastern port city of Busan by 2030.
The announcement was made during a press conference at the embassy in Seoul, where officials outlined this year's cultural initiatives.
Additionally, discussions have already begun between the center and Hanwha Group regarding a Seoul branch, as the Pompidou Center seeks to expand its global presence beyond France.
A leading modern and contemporary art institution, the center currently operates branches in Malaga, Spain; Brussels, Belgium; and Shanghai, China.
The embassy said the Seoul outpost is expected to open next year, presenting eight exhibitions.
However, some in the art industry and civic groups have raised concerns about launching two South Korean outposts simultaneously, citing the significant financial burden on taxpayers.
The French Embassy stressed that the project aims to foster cultural and artistic exchanges between the two countries.
In addition to the Pompidou expansion, the embassy is supporting Villa Busan, an artist residency program created in collaboration with the cities of Busan and Cannes.
The program has already welcomed two visual artists who completed residencies and exhibitions last year, with another group scheduled to begin a three-month program in June. The embassy described the program as a top priority in cultural diplomacy, fostering sustained creative partnerships.
Two French webtoon artists will begin a two-month residency in Korea in March, while four French musicians are set to participate in a weeklong songwriting program at JYP Entertainment from March 24-30.
Noting the strong appeal of Korean culture in France, the embassy stressed the importance of industry professionals in driving cross-cultural collaborations.
