According to Yonhap News,

(Busan = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Sang-hyun = The Chungjang-ro underground roadway, a key hinterland road for the Busan Port North Port redevelopment project site, will open at the end of this March.

The Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries's Busan Port Construction Office announced on the 27th that it will prioritize the opening of the 1.86 km four-lane underground section in late March, ahead of the full completion of the North Port hinterland road construction scheduled for May.

Prior to the opening, the Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries will conduct a joint inspection on the 28th with related organizations, including Busan Metropolitan City, the Busan Facilities Corporation, and the Busan Construction Safety and Test Headquarters.

During this inspection, officials will comprehensively review all facilities, including the underground roadway structures, drainage, and safety features, and plan to address any identified issues by the end of next month.

Following the necessary administrative procedures, the underground roadway section will be opened first in late March. The 1.94 km surface-level section above the underground roadway will be completed in late May after finishing final works, such as the treatment of contaminated soil.

The construction of the North Port hinterland underground roadway began in October 2019 to improve accessibility from downtown Busan to the North Port redevelopment site and to alleviate traffic congestion in the Chungjang-ro and Busan Station areas.

The project involves renovating a 1.94 km stretch of Chungjang-ro (6 to 10 lanes), widely known as the "wharf road," and constructing a 1.86 km four-lane underground roadway beneath it.

The project was originally scheduled for completion in the second half of 2023. However, the completion date was repeatedly pushed back due to design changes, the treatment of contaminated soil within the construction zone, and delays caused by seawater inflow into the underground section.

Once the North Port hinterland underground roadway opens, accessibility to the North Port Waterfront Park is expected to improve, further boosting the activation of the first phase of the North Port redevelopment project.

"Through this joint inspection, we will thoroughly finalize the preparations for the early opening of the Chungjang-daero underground roadway to resolve traffic congestion during commuting hours and minimize inconvenience for road users," said Baek Jong-min, Head of the Port Maintenance Division at the Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries.
