[Busan=Newsis] Reporter Won Dong-hwa = Pusan National University (PNU) has been selected for the central government's core Artificial Intelligence (AI) talent cultivation project, paving the way to develop original core technologies in advanced medical AI.

PNU announced on the 8th that it was selected for the 'AI Star Fellowship' program supervised by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and the Institute for Information & Communication Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP).

The AI Star Fellowship is a large-scale R&D support project designed to foster next-generation top-tier core talent to lead global AI technological competition.

Following this selection, PNU will commit a total of KRW 12.1 billion (USD 9.10 million)—including KRW 11 billion (USD 8.27 million) in national budget funding—over a six-year period from the second half of this year through December 2031.

Led by Song Gil-tae, Professor of School of Computer Science and Engineering and Dean of the College of Information and Biomedical Engineering, faculty members across PNU's Computer Science, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, and Biomedical Convergence Engineering departments will collaborate to develop next-generation multimodal medical foundation models and scalable precision medicine platforms.

The research team aims to secure core original technologies across three key focus areas.
1. Autonomous Robotic Surgery & Ultrasound: AI-driven autonomous ultrasound robotic scanning and multimodal 3D diagnostic/surgical assistance technologies.
2. Explainable Multimodal LLMs: High-reliability diagnostic and reasoning models based on Large Language Models (LLMs) that integrate domain knowledge, medical imaging, and clinical language with evidence-tracing capabilities.
3. Domain-Generalization & Biomarkers: Foundation models for domain generalization across nanosensors and pathological imaging, along with disease biomarker extraction technologies.

Industry-academia partners participating in the initiative include global medical device maker Samsung Medison, generative AI enterprise 42Maru, and clinical testing institution Seegene Medical Foundation.

Professor Song stated, "Through on-site clinical verification at regional medical institutions, we will secure world-class original medical AI technologies," adding, "We will diffuse these technologies across regional strategic industries, elevating PNU into a global hub for practical AI talent development."
