North Chungcheong Ginseng Still Popular in Japan, Exports USD 3.6 Million This Year

(JEUNGPYEONG=Yonhap News) Japanese demand for North Chungcheong Ginseng continues to rise for another year.

The North Chungcheong Ginseng Agricultural Cooperative Association announced Feb. 27 that it had signed export contracts worth USD 3.6 million (approx. KRW 4.08 billion) with Japanese companies in 2016, and has begun shipments last month.

The association aims to export USD 4 million this year, of which USD 400,000 they hope to sell to China.

In 2015, the association was awarded the 2015 Agricultural Product Export Pagoda by the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation for having exported ginseng products to Japan and China worth USD 1.78 million that year, and recorded USD 3.9 million in total exports in 2016.

Domestic sales reached KRW 2.13 million last year, aided by the popularity of its brand Samnuri.
