According to Yonhap News,

Chungcheongbuk-do said on July 7 that Jecheon and Danyang's quota of 'region-special visa' which is granted to migrants coming to local cities or villages to work or live was filled. The visa quota of 170 was exhausted in just 6 months.

The region-special visa was introduced to allow foreigners who meet certain requirements to work in local areas suffering from dwindling populations and ultimately encourage them to settle down in the regions.

In Danyang, 35 slots of the first-half quota are all taken. Jeocheon, which had received 135 slots, added more and got all filled last month.

It is said that 71% (121 ppl.) of those received the visa are currently working in manufacturers of the food or automobile sectors. Some 55% (94 ppl.) are found to settle down in Jecheon or Danyang, with a recent inflow of 109 those who obtained the visa from other cities or local areas.

Chungbuk province plans to work together with local universities and industries to scale up the project next year by designing region-specific models, while making up for what they lacked in this year's project after analyzing the result of it.

An official of the Chungbuk provincial government said, "Thanks to the visa program, the inflow of migrants in Chungbuk province has been on the rise. The local authorities promise the best supports to attract competent and skillful migrant workers."
