According to Yonhap News,

Chungju, Chungbuk-do, the "home of Ureuk," will become a hub city for Korean traditional music contents.

On December 26, Chungju-si announced that it was finally designated as a " Korean cultural city" by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST).

Chungju-si overcame the failed attempts, being eliminated three times (2018, 2019, and 2021), and finally became a cultural city in Korea in its fourth attempts.

The Cultural City of Korea is a project to supported by the MCST, which aims to create local culture and spread its own city brand. Thirteen local governments nationwide, including Chungju, have been designated as cultural cities.

The city originally aimed to create a "glocal hub city for cultural content," but it changed its goal to a "Korean traditional music content hub city" in April this year through consultation with the MCST.

The city plans to more actively expand and promote 11 projects in four areas that have been steadily carried out for a year since December last year, when it was selected as a preliminary city for a cultural city in Korea.

Ureuk is a renowned musician from the sixth century said to be the founder of Korean music, who moved from Gaya to Gukwon(currently Chungju ), Shilla, where he created the gayageum, a Korean 12-string instrument, and taught his students. Tangeumdae is known to be the place where Ureuk played gayageum.
