According to Yonhap News,

Chungbuk-do is advancing the sophistication of its regionally specialized industry in smart IT components and systems.

On February 15, the province announced that it will invest KRW 18 billion over the next five years to promote the second phase of the Cheongju Innopolis (R&D Special Zone).

In 2019, the Ministry of Science and ICT designated Chungbuk National University's main campus, the Ochang Campus, and parts of the Ochang Industrial Complex as the Cheongju Innopolis.

From 2020 to last year, a first-phase project involving KRW 19.9 billion helped establish 30 research-based companies and supported 65 startups within the special zone.

The project also achieved, with companies in the special zone, results such as 172 technology transfers, investments totaling KRW 10.6 billion, the creation of 299 jobs, and total sales of KRW 34.6 billion.

The second-phase project, which begins this year, aims to advance the existing focus on smart IT components and systems by strengthening technology commercialization and business support, and establishing an innovation hub for advanced industries.

Specific initiatives include the creation of a deep-tech technology commercialization platform. The plan is to enhance support for technology commercialization in the deep-tech field using existing infrastructures, such as the Semiconductor IT Components Center, Secondary Battery Demonstration Center, and Digital Innovation Hub.

Additionally, an "Open Innovation Engine" will be built to support technology verification and demonstration, and product development. This will allow companies within the special zone to carry out research and development more effectively while utilizing necessary technology verification and demonstration infrastructure during the early stages of R&D planning.

Moreover, efforts to discover deep-tech startups and strengthen full-cycle support will help technology-based startups grow steadily.

A provincial official stated, "We will spare no effort in supporting Cheongju’s Innopolis to become a core hub leading regional industrial innovation."
