Chungbuk-do has began the intiative in earnest to establish a Global R&D Clinical Reserach Center in Osong, Cheongju.

On May 16, Chungbuk-do held a research service kickoff meeting for the establishment of the center at the Osong Medical Innovation Foundation.

The meeting was attended by the Governor of Chungbuk Province, the Chairman of the Osong Medical Innovation Foundation, the Dean of KAIST's College of Life Sciences and Bioengineering, among others.

Also present were officials from Seoul National University Hospital, who are being considered as the operating institution for the center.

The center's purpose is to conduct clinical trials for new drugs being developed by various domestic and international innovation institutions and companies, including KAIST, the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, and the Osong Medical Innovation Foundation.

The province plans to build the center with a budget of KRW 800 billion for 4 years, from 2027 to 2030. The envisioned facility will consist of two underground floors and 10 above-ground floors, with 500 hospital beds.

The main functions of the center will include basic research to solve medical, social, and academic issues, clinical trials for rare and intractable diseases and smart Medicare demonstration studies based on hospitals, specialized treatment for cancer, rare diseases, disabilities, and elderly patients, as well as commercialization support for large corporations and venture capital companies.

Chungbuk-do expects that once the center is established, it will position itself as a new type of research hospital and, driving the development of 'Osong K-Bio Square,' along with the 'KAIST Biomedical Campus.'

K-Bio Square is a national policy project that will integrate biomedical campuses with business, commercial, financial, and residential spaces in Osong, with a goal to foster core talent in biotechnology and create a global R&D-centered biotech cluster.
