According to Yonhap News,

SPC Group, a major South Korean food and beverage company, said Thursday it will invest 300 billion won (US$204.6 million) to build a new "safety-smart factory" following several fatal workplace accidents in recent years.

The new plant, to be built in Eumseong, about 100 kilometers south of Seoul, will incorporate advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), automated robotics and Internet-of-Things (IoT) sensors, to strengthen worker safety, the company said in a press release.

Construction is scheduled to begin next year, with completion targeted for 2028.

"Building a safety-smart factory marks an important turning point for SPC's transformation, innovation and shift toward safety-centered management. We will establish a facility with top-tier safety systems to enhance trust among employees, customers and all stakeholders," SPC Vice Chairman and Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) Hur Jin-soo said.

The new plant will be 2.5 times larger than SPL, SPC's flagship production base, making it the group's biggest facility once completed, SPC said.

The company said it aims to have the plant recognized as a "Lighthouse Factory," a designation awarded annually by the World Economic Forum (WEF) and McKinsey & Co. to factories that lead innovation through Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies.

SPC currently operates 26 production facilities in South Korea, along with bakery plants in China and Malaysia. In September, it began construction of its third overseas bakery plant in the United States.
