According to Newsis,
[Cheongju = Newsis] Reporter Lee Do-geun – Cheongju International Airport continues its passenger growth momentum despite negative factors such as high oil prices.
According to aviation statistics data from the Korea Airports Corporation on the 12th, the number of passengers utilizing Cheongju Airport in April stood at 411,952, representing an 18.4 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
Among regional airports excluding Incheon International Airport, this ranks as the fourth-highest figure, following Gimhae, Gimpo, and Jeju airports.
The growth rate of international passengers was the highest among all regional airports nationwide. International passenger traffic in April reached 162,552, recording a growth rate of 45.2 percent year-on-year.
Domestic passenger traffic also supported substantial growth, reaching 249,400 passengers, a 5.7 percent increase compared to a year earlier.
This achievement holds greater significance as it was accomplished amid adverse conditions, including high oil prices caused by unstable international situations such as the Middle East conflict, alongside reductions in aviation demand.
The Korea Airports Corporation will invest KRW 316.8 billion to expand airport infrastructure. The annual handling capacity of the international terminal will be expanded from the current 1.52 million passengers to around 3.0 million passengers, and construction on the domestic terminal will also begin within this year. Additionally, the corporation plans to secure 1,000 parking spaces by expanding the second parking building.
Kim Min-jung, Head of the Regional Balanced Development Division of Chungcheongbuk-do, stated, "Despite challenging external conditions, Cheongju Airport continues to maintain one of the highest growth rates nationwide." She added, "Through large-scale infrastructure investments, we will do our utmost to ensure Cheongju Airport leaps beyond being a central region hub airport to become an international gateway airport."
