Yeongdong Aims to Develop Wine Industry

According to Yeongdong County last week, it held a discussion session on its wine industry to listen to voices of experts in related industries.

Professor Yook Cheol at the Youngdong University and President of the Korea International Sommelier Association (KISA) Ko Jae-yoon discussed development measures for the wine industry.

President Ko suggested facilitating wine tourism, signing a memorandum of understanding with universities specialized in food service industries and building online homepages of wineries to develop the wine industry.

Yeongdong Governor Jeong Gu-bok noted that it is time to identify the current status of Yeongdong’s wine industry and look for measures for further development. He added the county will look for a development direction based on advices from wine industry experts.

Governor Jeong also received an honorary certificate of sommelier by the KISA.

Sommeliers also tasted about ten different wines produced from Yeongdong wineries.

The county produced 33,796 tons of grapes from vineyards of 2,216 ha, which accounts for 12.7 percent of Korea’s total vineyards last year. Total 45 wineries are located in Yeongdong.
