Okchon to Invest in Inland Fisheries Project

(OKCHON = Newsis) Chungcheongbuk-do Okchon announced on February 10 that it will invest a total of KRW two billion in inland fisheries project to develop the region’s inland fisheries industry and improve incomes of local residents.

According to the county, it will invest KRW 2.015 billion in the following areas: ▲ protection and increase of the species (KRW 96 million) ▲ elimination of invasive fishes and development of fishery infrastructure (KRW 313 million) ▲ subsidies for local residents residing near the dam (KRW 166 million).

The county will free 9,000 eels, one million marsh snails and 71,000 carps in Geumgang river in a bid to diversify the fish species.

It will also capture invasive fishes such as the bluegill and bass to protect the native fish species, and install an artificial spawning pool near Janggye Bridge in Annae-myeon.

Old fishing boats and its engines will be replaced or repaired to project fishermen.

The county will also provide subsidies for local residents to form a self-governing fishing community, construct an environmental-friendly fishing areas and purchase fry of the mudfish.

It will also push ahead to commence a maintenance and improvement works on roads, rivers and community center.
