According to Yonhap News,

(CHEONGJU=Yonhap News) Chungcheongbuk-do announced on May 30 that it will install a network within Ochang Science Industrial Complex, located at Cheongwon-gun, to measure harmful air pollutants within the complex. The decision was made by Chungcheongbuk-do in response to an inquiry made the day before by the Cheongwon gun Parents Association, on reducing air pollutants within the complex.

The province will also set emission reduction goal of dichloromethane (CH2CI2), a type of carcinogen. It will jointly monitor the implementation progress with Cheongwon-gun as well as civil societies, and work with the Ministry of Environment and National Institute of Environmental Research to disclose CH2CI2 level to the public, once it is measured.

“Dichloromethane is classified as a very weak form of carcinogen, almost similar to coffee, naphthalene, gasoline, lead, and electromagnetic radiation of cell phones. There is no need to worry.” said an official.

According to the province, last year’s measurement on dichloromethane contamination level within factories in the complex revealed 0.145∼0.002ppm, and little or none (0.001ppm) was detected within the residential area. Clean Air Conservation Act, which went into effect on May 24, regulates CH2CI2 level of over 50ppm.

“We will continuously monitor large emitters of dichloromethane and provide them with necessary guidance to put the local residents at ease,” said an official from the province.
