(GWANGJU=Yonhap News) The economy of Gwangju increased in the second quarter while the economy of South Jeolla Province decreased.

According to the Honam Regional Statistics Office on August 12, the indices of the industrial production, number of employment, construction orders, exports and population of Gwangju increased compared to the same period last year while the indices of South Jeolla Province declined except for the construction orders.

For Gwangju, the indices of the industrial production increased by 6.6 percent, number of employment by 5.2 percent, construction orders by 11.1 percent, exports by 2.2 percent and population by 0.18 percent while the sales of large and small retailers decreased by 10.9 percent.

For South Jeolla Province, the indices of the industrial production declined by 6.1 percent, sales of large and small retailers by 4.7 percent, number of employment by 0.6 percent, exports by 1.7 percent and population by 0.07 percent while the construction sales increased by 178.7 percent.

The consumer price index of Gwangju recorded 2.1 percent, a 1.6 percent higher than the national average, while that of South Jeolla Province was 1.3 percent.
