KT on track to showcase 5G tech in PyeongChang

According to Yonhap News,

(SEOUL=Yonhap News) South Korea's No. 2 mobile carrier KT Corp. said Monday it will be able to provide fifth-generation (5G) network services at the venue of the Winter Olympics in 2018 as scheduled, setting a new milestone for the global telecommunications industry.

KT, the official network service provider of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, said its wireless platforms can serve up to 250,000 devices at the same time. The company added that the size is twice that of what was provided at the Sochi Winter Games in 2014.

KT said it will complete 30 percent of the construction at the end of February and finish the project this year, eventually to start services in 2017.

The upcoming sports event will invite around 6,000 athletes from 100 countries, and its programs are expected to reach 3.8 billion viewers, it said.

The company added it will create deeper relationships with other global players to have the technologies featured at PyeongChang become international standards of the 5G industry.

KT also said it will boast a handful of other state-of-the-art services such as 360 degree virtual reality that will provide realistic experiences to viewers enjoying sports games at home. The Hologram Live service will also allow athletes to conduct interviews straight from the ski slope through holograms, it added.

KT, previously a state-run firm, has been providing network services for several key sports events, including the Seoul Summer Olympics in 1988 and the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

PyeongChang, an alpine city located about 180 kilometers east of Seoul, won the bid to host the game in 2011.
