(SEOUL=Yonhap News) A local tourism research body on Wednesday kicked off an academic conference on ways to stimulate the hospitality industry through the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games.

The Tourism Sciences Society of Korea (TOSOK) opened a three-day international conference at Alpensia Resort in PyeongChang, some 180 kilometers east of Seoul, in Gangwon Province, with a focus on how to foster tourism in the region following South Korea's first Winter Olympics.

The TOSOK said its conference will explore tourism policy in PyeongChang ahead of the Winter Games and sustainable marketing plans for Gangwon tourism linked to the Olympics, among other topics.

It has invited scholars, government officials and industry experts to present papers and engage in discussions on how the province can best capitalize on the quadrennial competition that typically attracts tens of thousands of tourists. "To make sure we use the PyeongChang Winter Games as an opportunity to develop our culture and tourism, we have to start preparing now," said Byun Woo-hee, president of the TOSOK. "We have to lay down the foundation on what should be done after the Olympics."

Founded in 1972, the TOSOK is the nation's largest academic body on tourism with 2,000 members, and organizes conferences and special lectures each year.
