According to Yonhap News,

(CHUNCHEON=Yonhap News) Gangwon-do will focus on fostering the drone industry in the wake of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

On April 8, the province announced its 5-year plan for fostering the drone industry. The tasks within the plan include forest fire monitoring, leisure sports, pesticide control and marine rescue.

The main objective of the 5-year plan is to create a new market by improving vulnerable flight conditions and revitalizing related companies, fostering experts, and preempting drone leisure sports.

To start, Gangwon-do will proceed with 8 tasks to establish a governance for fostering the drone industry.

The province decided to establish a Gangwon-do drones association in the second half of the year to consult with relevant ministries on how to delegate licensing and business registration to local governments.

In particular, Gangwon-do plans to designate a special zone for drones next year, attract 5 drone-manufacturing companies by 2022, and to attract national test institutes.

Also, in celebration of the successful 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, a national drone championship tournament is in the talks and officials are looking at measures to expand and regulate the new competition.

A province official stated, "The 5-year plan is expected to upgrade the region's sluggish drone industry," and added, "within this year, we plan to operate agricultural pest control, forest fire monitoring, search and rescue support, education support, etc., and concentrate our administrative power on fostering drone operators and creating new jobs for youth."
