(WONJU=Yonhap News) The Ministry of Environment Wonju Regional Environment Office announced it will support the regions of Gangwon and Chungbuk expand its basic environmental facilities and restore ecological rivers with KRW 352.7 billion to create a safe and healthy local environment.

The project will include KRW 186 billion for outdated sewer maintenance and basic environmental facilities expansion, KRW 13.4 billion for the ecological river restoration project as well as KRW 7.1 billion for the conservation of the natural environment and biological resources.

This year especially, the ministry will concentrate on regions with potential water pollution and on securing safe water sources to create a healthy environment with clean water.

The ministry will also test the contaminated waters of Wonju River, Gangneung Namdae Stream and Chungcheongbuk-do Jecheon River to establish and promote water quality improvement measures, establish local communities and governance and promote muddy water reduction projects.

In addition, the ministry will thoroughly manage environmental hazards such as fine dust and strengthen its ability to cope with environmental pollution and chemical accidents.

To this end, it will support various fine dust reduction projects such as the early scrapping of 2,464 old vehicles and the operation of 3 dirt sweepers, and expand the urban air monitoring network to 23 cities and counties in Gangwon and Chungbuk.

To prevent and respond quickly to chemical accidents and terrorism, the Chungju Chemical Joint Disaster Prevention Center will be established in August for the special inspection of hazardous chemical substance handling sites and civilian-joint-accident response drills will be implemented.

There will also be environmental services available to local residents.
