Gangneung selected as one of five regions to go ahead with tourism competitiveness enhancement program

(SEOUL=Yonhap News) Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) said on April 1 that it plans to go ahead with a project to bolster the competitiveness of regional tourism this year, and selected five local governments as the first support recipients.

Through public notification last month, KTO selected Dong-gu (Ulsan), Gangneung-si (Gangwon), Pocheon-si (Gyeonggi), Iksan-si (Jeonbuk), and Seosan-si (Chungnam) as those to proceed with a program to increase tourism competitiveness.

Various programs to enhance competitiveness of tourism will proceed in these regions with experts' advice until November this year.

Besides, KTO is to select another five local governments to get paid in-depth consulting on tourism competitiveness, and increase the number to 24 by 2020.

Last year, KTO selected five local governments including Boseong-gun (Jeonnam) as a pilot program for tourism competitiveness, providing them with facility repair, online and offline promotion, and program development support.

A KTO official said, "By connecting program implementation of local governments with the diagnosis model for regional tourism competitiveness, we can expect reduction on wasted investment and creation of virtuous cycle for sustainable development," adding that "we will focus on providing tourism development solutions tailored to region."
