According to Yonhap News,

President Lee Myung-bak attended a groundbreaking ceremony of Wonju-Gangreung high-speed train project at Gangreung Station in Gangwon Province.

He said, "I'd like to celebrate the groundbreaking of the high-speed railway project between Wonju-Gangreung. And I believe that we could successfully organize the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics as well."

The high-speed train project was selected one of the 30 leading projects in Gangwon in 2008, designed to facilitate its regional economy, and began in May, 2010 when the organization committee of Pyeongchang Winter Olympics approved the two-land railway project.

The high-speed train can reach the maximum speed of up to 250km/h and will be built by the late 2017. If completed, the train will dramatically improve Gangwon's accessibility to the Seoul Metropolitan Area, enabling people to come to and from Seoul within an hour.

The ceremony brought together major figures including the Minister of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs Gwon Do-yeop, Gangwon Governor Choi Mun-sun, commissioner of organization committee of Pyeongchang Winter Olympics Kim Jin-seon and about 1,000 Gangwon residents.
