Gangreung City has launched the low-carbon green city project.

It signed a contract with SK C&C to establish smart infrastructures, one of the green technologies to be introduced in the low-carbon green city project.

A total of 5.6 billion won will be injected into building massive Energy Storage System that stores idle power, produced from various photovoltaic generation plants, during the day and utilizes the power at night, which will enable the city to realize its vision to become energy self-sufficient.

To that end, the city plans to use its green IT technologies including Power Conversion System and Automatic Meter Reading, developed by SK C&C.

The power, generated from photovoltaic plants, is converted into electricity that can be used in the convention center, accommodation facilities and transit centers via power conversion system and the amount of electricity used will be monitored with telemetering system on a real time basis.

Users can check the amount of electricity used through the energy monitoring system on a facility or an accommodation basis.

Electricity reserves can be used to charge batteries for the Energy Storage System.

The Battery Management System helps electricity reserve capacity maintain optimal condition by monitoring battery on a real time basis, to prevent overcharge and over-discharge.

"All kinds of green IT technologies and solutions, developed by the domestic company SK C&C, will be utilized in creating the low-carbon green city. We will make the first exemplary model of carbon-free green city based on IT," said Hong Seong-tae, a Gangreung official in charge of green city.
