Choi Seung-jun, Governor of Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon Province, where the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics ski downhill race will be held, announced its bid for the 2020 Youth Olympics Games in a press conference held in the mid-December.

"We decided to submit the bid for the 2020 Youth Olympics Games to develop Gangwon into a winter sports mecca, revitalize the economy of abandoned mine sites in the southern Gangwon and pursue the balanced national development," said Governor Choi.

He came up with the idea of using HIGH1 Resort as a main stadium and Pyeongchang Olympics' facilities for other competitions, saying that "We will make the best Youth Olympics Games with minimum expanses."

The Youth Olympics Games, approved by the International Olympic Committee in July, 2007, is an international multi-sport event that features athletes aged between 14 and 18.
