Gangwon Province is doing its utmost to host the 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD COP12), which is scheduled to be held in Korea in 2014. Last Tuesday, the provincial government held a briefing session on the progress of its preparations for UNCBD COP12 and reaffirmed its intent to host. A hundred and fifty people from environmental institutes and social organizations attended the session. The opening of UNCBD COP12 in Korea was decided by the general assembly at UNCBD COP11, which was held in India last year.

“By hosting the conference in our region, we can attract bio-industry and ecotourism-related projects, establish a solid foundation for the MICE industry, and gain international recognition,” said a Gangwon provincial official.

In February, the Ministry of Environment received applications from cities wanting to host UNCBD COP12. It will soon establish a council to examine the eligibility of candidate cities to select a winner by April.
