Gangwon Prepares the 12th Meeting of UNCBD

Gangwon Province announced that its biodiversity taskforce established after successfully attracting the 12th meeting of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD) will be upgraded to the a division to support the general assembly of the UNCDB.

The province plans to increase the human resources from five to 15.

An additional division will also be established by the end of this year, so that two divisions can provide support until the end of the 12th meeting.

Gangwon Province also launched an advisory committee to prepare for the UNCBD meeting, which consists of biodiversity and environment experts.

The committee will have three divisions which will work on agenda item development, bioindustry and ecotourism.

A Gangwon official noted that the province will expand the organization as it has 15 months to prepare for the meeting, adding that it will strengthen cooperation with the advisory committee and the Korean government hod the successful event.

The 12th meeting of the UNCBD will be held in Pyeongchang from September 29 to October 18, 2014. About 20,000 participants from 193 governments, international organizations and non-government organizations are expected to attend.

The Korea Environment Institute expected that the meeting have an economic effect of KRW 463.1 billion.
