According to Yonhap News,

Gangwon-do announced Aug 16 that it formed a working-level consultative body to build a semiconductor cluster in Wonju.

Composed of 22 people from 17 local universities along with the Gangwon Research Institute and the Gangwon-do Office of Education, the body plans to have its first meeting on Aug 17.

Meanwhile, it was possible to create the body as Gangwon Governor Kim Jin-tae accepted the relevant proposal suggested in the University Presidents' Council held in the province on July 14.

The working-level consultative body, at its first meeting, will share and discuss matters including Gangwon-do's move to train people of talent in semiconductor, the province's direction for advancing the testbed establishment, and local universities' semiconductor educations underway.

Going forwards, it will also review plans for the establishment of a semiconductor education hub for joint education, research and practice at the governmental level, as well as the formation of infrastructures such as public testbeds.

A project of creating the Wonju Semiconductor Cluster was the key promise by the governor who brought about a turnover of political power in 12 years.

Deputy Governor of Economy Jeong Gwang-yeol said, "The creation project of semiconductor cluster, the key promise of the 8th popular election, is a tall order for Gangwon since it lacks a foundation for the semiconductor industry, but we will improve the relevant conditions with our first step in making a system of supplying manpower from different sectors that semiconductor-related businesses want.
