The first discussion meeting of the elected members of 2022 local elections that brings together Provincial Governor, Mayors and County Executives of Gangwon Province was held on Apr. 24.

The major goal of this event was to strengthen the relations between Gangwon province and its cities and counties as well as share imminent issues and measures to address them, ahead of the launch of its new status as a 'special autonomous province'.

This is the first official meeting in 9 years since 2014.

The major agendas dealt with in the meeting were legislations on its new status as a special autonomous province and shrinking population in the region.

In particular, leaders of the province, cities, and counties announced a joint statement hoping a successful inception of the special autonomous province.

They decided to make commitments to making concerted efforts in pursuing a global city equipped with future industries, coming up with solutions to large-scale disasters and catastrophes, by having more authority and powers transferred from the central government, which will usher in the 'era of local autonomy'.

In the meeting, the Province Governor called on cities and counties to provide support and cooperation to ensure successful hosts of Gangwon Forestry Exhibition 2023 and Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024.

Governor Kim Jin Tae said, "Since the revised legislation on Gangwon Special Autonomous Province is still pending in the National Assembly due to its busy schedules, we are trying to encourage them to pass it by using multiple channels.", and "I feel grateful to see residents in cities and counties raised their voices in unison for the bill."

He added, "The key to solving declining population is Gangwon Special Autonomous Province." and "I will proceed with responsive measures in phases to tackle the issue while holding office. Let us make a better and business-friendly Gangwon province where people love to live in by having fully revised legislation on Gangwon Special Autonomous Province passed and getting rid of unnecessary regulations."
