According to Yonhap News,

Gangwon-do has attracted a semiconductor company for the first time since the launch of a special self-governing province.

Gangwon-do plans to sign an investment agreement with Global Quartz Leader (GQL, a semiconductor company) on the establishment of a new Wonju plant in Wonju Munmak Agricultural and Industrial Complex on August 14.

GQL plans to invest KRW 47 billion to commence construction of a silicon ingot manufacturing plant next month on a 9,756㎡ site in the Munmak Agricultural and Industrial Complex and complete it in March next year.

Established in October 2004, GQL produces parts for semiconductor process equipment, with its headquarters located in Oksan Science Complex in Cheongju, Chungbuk-do.

Even in the face of challenges in supplying semiconductor materials in Korea, GQL has shown continued sales growth with the establishment of about 50 precision processing facilities since 2014.

GQL is known to have decided to establish a new plant in Wonju to prepare for an increase in demand for semiconductor processing parts and to build a stable supply chain domestically.

Gangwon state predicts that the establishment of a new plant would create 45 new jobs.
