According to Yonhap News,

On July 8, Gangwon State announced that it will put into KRW 450 billion in three major hydrogen projects to become a leader in the future hydrogen economy.

The three key projects refer to: a pilot city, a regulation free special zone, and a cluster.

In the case of the hydrogen pilot city (KRW 31.7 billion), it was completed last year and has been in operation in Gyodong, Samcheok. It is a self-sufficient residential complex that can be operated independently for up to a month without external energy supply.

In this pilot city, technologies related with hydrogen production, storage, and usage will be demonstrated.

Gangwon State also plans to establish regulation free special zones of 269,593㎡ (KRW 34 billion) for the liquid hydrogen industry in Gangneung, Donghae, Samcheok, and Pyeongchang in November this year.

In the regulation-free special zones, various demonstration projects will be carried out such as production of liquid hydrogen containers, production facilities for liquid hydrogen, fixed and mobile charging stations, and hydrogen mobility.

The cluster project (KRW 317.7 billion), which passed the preliminary feasibility study by the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MOEF) in December last year, will foster related industries by establishing an industrial promotion center, a safety test center, and a demonstration test bed in Donghae.

Gangwon also will lay the foundation for hydrogen storage and transportation industry for Donghae and Samcheok by creating hydrogen liquefaction plant with a daily capacity of 30 tons in Samcheok.

Gangwon applied for the designation of a hydrogen-specialized complex by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) to speed up the implementation of three major projects.

Gangwon's governor said, "we plan to grow as a center of the hydrogen industry with three key hydrogen projects," adding that "if we could be designated as a specialized complex, we'll be able to attract 80 companies and KRW 450 billion in investment."
