Gangwon and Saarland (Germany) to cooperate in the development of future industry
Gangwon State has initiated exchanges for future industry cooperation with Saarland state, Germany.
On March 6, Gangwon held a meeting with Jurgen Barke, Minister of Economics, Innovation, Digitalisation and Energy and Deputy Prime Minister of Saarland, to discuss collaboration opportunities between the two regions.
Before their visit to Gangwon, the Saarland delegation visited Gangwon University, the Chuncheon Bio-Industry Foundation, and Bodytech Med, a local in-vitro diagnostic company, to examine the current status of the bioindustry and explore potential areas for cooperation.
Both regions share a common history of economic development based on mining industries including coal and iron ore mining, and are now aiming for economic growth through advanced technology.
Located in the southwest of Germany, Saarland is known as the birthplace of Industry 4.0, where the integration of information and communication technology (ICT) with production equipment maximizes automation and productivity, positioning the region as a leader in the fourth industrial revolution.
KIST Europe, a branch of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology, is also located in Saarland, serving as a hub for joint research and corporate support between Korea and the EU.
Gangwon's Governor said, "Gangwon is a famous location for K-pop and K-drama filming," and encouraged interest in visiting Gangwon during 2025-2026 as the Year of Gangwon Visit.
The Gangwon delegation, led by Governor, will visit Saarland in June this year, with plans to expand cooperation with Europe in future industries, including bio, energy, future mobility, and ICT.
