According to Yonhap News,

On March 17, the Governor of Gangwon State, said that "We will foster the climate tech industry as the seventh future industry of Gangwon State."

At a press meeting held at the provincial government, Governor Kim emphasized, "We will establish infrastructure that can systematically and comprehensively respond to the climate, environment, and energy sectors."

Climate tech is a combination of climate and technology, referring to all innovative technologies that contribute to combating overcoming change while generating economic profits.

Notable examples include high-value-added future agriculture, carbon capture and utilization (CCU), biotechnology, and hydrogen energy.

Last year, the government announced its strategy to foster the climate tech industry, aiming to cultivate 10 unicorn companies by 2030 and achieve KRW 100 trillion in exports, by investing KRW 145 trillion in total.

Accordingly, Gangwon State plans to strengthen policy support for the climate tech industry based on the Climate Change Research Institute of Korea, which was established in 2008 and has since developed climate-related infrastructure and networks.

The Climate Change Research Institute of Korea is a specialized research institution for climate change, established based on approval from the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE) 2008. In addition, the province's strategy is to systematically foster the climate tech industry, using the Climate Change Response Complex Center (tentatively named the Climate Tech Center), which will begin construction on March 20 as a focal point.

The Climate Tech Center will be developed with a total project cost of KRW 17.5 billion, covering an area of 3,154 square meters in Sincheon-ri, Dongnae-myeon, Chuncheon-si. It is expected to complete construction by the second half of 2026.

The center will house educational, exhibition, experience, and promotional facilities, a climate change library, startup incubation, and research facilities. It aims to become a central institution for fostering climate-related startups and industries.

So far, the province has pushed forward with approximately KRW 900 billion in climate tech-related industries, such as the Gangneung and Samcheok CCU Mega Project (KRW 190 billion), Chuncheon geothermal energy cluster (KRW 387.2 billion), and East Coast hydrogen storage and transport cluster (KRW 317.7 billion).

Above all, once the Climate Tech Center is established, it is expected to become a key think tank for attracting related industries, such as eco-tech (resource recycling), food tech (future agriculture), carbon tech, clean tech (environmental energy), and geo-tech (carbon credits).

Gangwon's Governor said, "With the Climate Change Research Institute, we're already leading the climate tech industry. We will actively promote climate tech as the province's seventh future industry."
