On October 1st, Wonju-si signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with ESOL, a company specializing in Extreme Ultra-Violet (EUV) semiconductor equipment, to attract investment.
The agreement involves an investment of KRW 50.5 billion (including land purchase, construction, and machinery), aimed at establishing a small-scale synchrotron radiation accelerator and advanced EUV semiconductor inspection equipment research and production facilities at the Buron General Industrial Complex.
EUV, with a wavelength of approximately 13.5nm, is an essential light source for advanced semiconductor ultra-fine processes (below 7nm).
Under the MOU, both parties will work to expand investments in manufacturing and research facilities within Wonju City, create employment, provide administrative and financial support for ESOL’s successful business operations and management stability, promote regional cooperation among industry, academia, research institutions, and local government, and jointly respond to central government projects and foster the growth of the local R&D ecosystem.
Wonju-si expects that once the ESOL's Wonju factory is completed, it will become an advanced hub combining research, production, and services.
In particular, the project is expected to have a significant impact on the industrial ecosystem
In addition to the direct investment of KRW 50.5 billion, approximately KRW 25 billion in indirect investments will further enhance the industrial ecosystem through the influx of partners, component suppliers, and research institutions.
Through collaboration with local universities and research institutions, R&D infrastructure will be expanded, and a virtuous cycle of talent development, such as the establishment of contract departments, will create a model where industry, employment, and education grow together.
This agreement is also meaningful as it is the first special support investment subsidy case approved by the Wonju City Council.
The special support fund will be gradually provided as subsidies based on investment performance, with KRW 5 billion annually from 2027 to 2029.
Previously, the city held three advisory meetings with domestic university professors and industry experts to verify the competitiveness of local industries and the industrial impact. Additionally, it has been preparing the industrial infrastructure to attract investment from global companies
As part of the 8th administration's industrial complex development, the city has been focusing on preparing five industrial parks (Buron, Sinpyeong, Taebong, Mega Data, and Mujang Advanced Science Park) with a total area of 1.43 million pyeong, ready for immediate investment as soon as companies express interest.
Additionally, the city is promoting four major strategies: talent development, testbed construction, industrial complex land development, and company attraction, including the establishment of semiconductor training centers and testbeds to create synergies with local and new semiconductor companies.
ESOL is the only EUV semiconductor equipment company in Korea and the fourth in the world. It has developed the only EUV semiconductor defect review equipment in Korea and has been recognized for its technical expertise through numerous government R&D projects.
