Gangwon confirmed to host the Defense Protection Test Center, KRW 48.3 bn national infrastructure
On December 4th, Gangwon State announced that it has successfully attracted the national research facility, the 'Defense Protection Test Center of the Defense Agency for Technology and Quality (DTaQ),' worth KRW 48.3 billion, to Chuncheon.
Gangwon State, which is fostering advanced defense industry as one of the ‘seven major future strategic industries,’ uated this successful bid as a significant achievement in strengthening the competitiveness of strategic industries.
The Defense Protection Test Center, which was confirmed for the next year’s government budget through parliamentary approval, will be built on a 28,000㎡ site in the Dong Chuncheon Industrial Complex.
A total of KRW 48.3 billion from the national budget will be invested in this project by 2030.
Once the national-level Defense Protection Test Center, including a research building and test facility with complete soundproofing, is established, it is expected to systematically promote advanced protection testing and next-generation protection technology research and development (R&D).
The Defense Protection Test Center will serve as a national infrastructure for precisely testing and uating the ballistic and durability performance of military equipment.
The DTaQ has previously had to commission overseas testing due to a lack of protection test infrastructure when exporting major K-defense weapons, such as the K9 self-propelled howitzer, K-tank, and K151 Light Tactical Vehicle.
With the establishment of the Defense Protection Test Center, the province expects to promote the national defense exports and the accumulation of next-generation protection system technologies.
It is also expected to play an important role in expanding the ‘Gangwon Defense Industry Ecosystem,’ including the defense innovation cluster the province is working to establish.
Gangwon State plans to accelerate the project through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the DTaQ early next year.
