Providing Comprehensive Support Channels for Foreign-invested Companies' Intellectual Property Issues and Patent Management
Emphasizing the Role of Foreign-invested Companies in Strengthening Korea's Industrial Competitiveness and Exports

KOTRA (President Kang Kyung-sung) and the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO, Commissioner Kim Wan-ki) have joined forces to offer continuous support for the innovation technologies and intellectual property (IP) protection of foreign-invested companies in Korea. On February 18, KOTRA and KIPO held an "IP Seminar for Foreign Chambers of Commerce and Foreign-invested Companies" at KIPO's Seoul office.

The seminar was attended by Jeffrey Jones, Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM), Sean Blakeley, Chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce in Korea, representatives from the European Chamber of Commerce in Korea (ECCK), the Seoul Japan Club (SJC), the Australian Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AustCham), and major foreign-invested companies in Korea, including 3M, Lam Research, and Umicore.

A representative from KOTRA’s Foreign Investment Ombudsman stated, "With the recognition that foreign-invested companies are key players in our economy, KOTRA and KIPO have joined forces to establish a system that provides ongoing support for addressing IP-related challenges faced by foreign-invested companies."

During the seminar, various issues faced by foreign-invested companies were discussed, including the circulation of counterfeit goods on online platforms, and strengthening responses to patent infringements and disputes.

Since signing an MOU for institutional cooperation in December 2023, KOTRA and KIPO have been supporting the export and investment attraction of IP-based SMEs. This year, they plan to extend support to foreign-invested companies as well.

Additionally, KOTRA will conduct "on-site" problem-solving activities throughout the year to resolve issues faced by foreign-invested companies. A total of 42 on-site seminars are scheduled across various industries and regions on this year.

Commissioner Kim Tae-hyung of KOTRA’s Invest KOREA, emphasized, "Foreign-invested companies play a significant role in exports, employment, and industrial advancement. Their successful operations signal the strength of our economy internationally," adding, "KOTRA will be a stepping stone for the growth of foreign-invested companies, from intellectual property protection to supporting export and investment attraction."
