Expand investment attraction outside the capital area through FEZs, especially from UK, Germany and Japan

The Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Resources (MOTIR), KOTRA, and the KFEZs have been strengthening cooperation to expand regional investments outside the capital area. As part of this effort, an investment promotion event focusing on ports and logistics was held in Japan.
*The KFEZ (Korean Free Economic Zones) are special economic zones designed to attract foreign investment by improving the business environment, living conditions, and easing regulations for foreign-invested companies. Currently, nine KFEZs are operating in Incheon, Busan-Jinhae, Gwangyang Bay Area, Gyeonggi, Daegu-Gyeongbuk, Chungbuk, Gangwon, Gwangju, and Ulsan.

From December 10th to 12th, MOTIR and KOTRA hosted the "K-FEZ Day in Japan" in Fukuoka, Japan, to attract investments in the port and logistics sectors. The event targeted potential investors in the Kyushu region of Japan and aimed to introduce the investment attractiveness of Korea and promote foreign investment activities in the FEZs. Fukuoka and the Kyushu region are known as key logistics gateways in western Japan, which is geographically close to Korea, and are hubs for maritime logistics between the two countries. The region is also developing industries related to logistics infrastructure, such as robotics, and automation.

The event, attended by around 100 participants from MOTIR, KOTRA, Incheon, Busan-Jinhae, and Gyeonggi FEZs, as well as major Japanese port and logistics companies such as Nippon Express, Mitsui-Soko, and Kokura Transport, featured port and logistics investment IR presentations and visits to key investors and relevant institutions.

Je kyung-hee, Director-General of the Free Economic Zone Planning Office at MOTIR, said, "This event brought together over 100 major Japanese port and logistics companies and provided an opportunity for KFEZs to seek cooperation with Japanese firms. Through tailored consultations and introducing specialized projects by KFEZs based on industries and regions, we expect to expand cooperation in the port and logistics sectors between Korea and Japan."

Commissioner Kim Tae-hyung of Invest KOREA also stated, "This was an opportunity to showcase Korea's investment attractiveness as a global logistics hub to Japanese companies. Especially, if cooperation focuses on port and logistics projects within the Economic Free Zones, it will contribute to enhancing the efficiency and stability of the supply chain between the two countries."
