The volume of cargo handled by the country's 31 seaports amounted to a record 637.39 million tons in the first half, compared to 595.40 million tons a year earlier, the data by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs showed.
The growth came from increased shipments of bituminous coal, oil-related products and automobiles moving in and out of local seaports.
Cargo shipments of bituminous coal jumped 12.9 percent from a year earlier, while those of oil products and cars rose 11.7 percent and 8.8 percent, respectively.
Volume of container cargo handled at local seaports also moved up 10.5 percent in the January-June period to 10.50 million TEUs, or 20-foot equivalent units. This marks the first time that total container cargo handling exceeded the 10 million TEU mark.
Busan, the largest port, located in the nation's southeast, retained its fifth spot in the world in terms of container cargo handling, which amounted to 7.87 million TEUs in the first half, up 13.0 percent from a year earlier, the data showed.
