LS Cable & System Ltd., South Korea's top wire and cable maker, said Tuesday that its U.S. subsidiary has begun to produce power cables for industrial use.

LS Cable said in a statement that its U.S. unit Superior Essex Inc. has started to produce 300 and 600 voltage power cables at a plant in Tarboro, North Carolina.

LS Cable took over Superior Essex, the largest wire and cable manufacturer in North America, for US$900 million in 2008.

LS Cable started building the U.S. plant in May last year with a budget of $60 million. The plant, whose construction is scheduled for completion in October, has begun to produce power cables for industrial use as a low-and-medium voltage power cables production line was already completed.

The company said that the move will pave the way for the company to penetrate into the North American cable market and make inroads into the European market.
