SK hynix Inc. the world's second-largest memory chipmaker, said Tuesday it has reached a patent cross-licensing deal with U.S.-based Spansion Inc. to expand its product portfolio and research capabilities.

The deal with the NOR flash memory technology leader could also reduce the chipmaker's vulnerability to patent claims that can disrupt production.

NOR memory is a non-volatile storage technology that does not require power to retain data and is faster in processing data than NAND flash memory devices, although its storage capability is limited. South Korean companies are globally dominant in the NAND chip field.

The South Korean company, formerly called Hynix Semiconductor Inc., added that under the strategic alliance arrangement, it secured a stable partner to produce single level cell NAND flash memory chips that can be used in cars, digital TVs, mobile phones.

SK hynix said the strategic tie-up complements the strengths of the two companies and could lead to greater research and development, and a more diverse product portfolio.

"By merging SK hynix's prowess in NAND flash memory production with Spansion's NOR-related knowhow, the deal can better meet the needs of the global market," said Kwon Oh-chul, chief executive of the South Korean chipmaker.
