Seoul ranks 9th among 77 cities in the Global Financial Centers Index (GFCI), the world's first index of the financial competitiveness of major cities and published by London-based consulting group Z/Yen. The city ranked 11th last September and 53rd in 2009.

The GFCI is published every March and September after combining online surveys from financial service professionals around the world and using evaluations in five areas, including manpower, business environment, market accessibility, infrastructures and general competitiveness, conducted by such external institutions as the International Institute for Management Development and World Economic Forum.

Seoul ranked fifth in infrastructures, business environment and general competitiveness.

London topped the list, followed by New Work, Hong Kong and Singapore. Also in the top ten were Shanghai and Tokyo. Seoul City attributed the high ranking of Asian cities to the fact that Asia was less affected by the global financial crisis than its Western counterparts and showed rapid economic recovery.
