South Korea's two flat-panel giants garnered an almost 32 percent share of the Chinese market in the first quarter of this year in the face of stiffer competition from Taiwanese rivals, a market report showed Monday.

LG Display Co. grabbed a 16.2 percent share of China's TV liquid crystal display (LCD) panel market in the January-March period to become the third largest player there, according to Taiwan-based LCD market research firm WitsView Technology Corp.

LG's home turf competitor Samsung Electronics Co. clinched a 16.1 percent market share in the period, ranking fourth.

The market leader in China was Taiwan's Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. (CMO), which led with a 33.3 percent share. AU Optronics Corp. (AUO), also of Taiwan, followed in second place with 21.3 percent.

While the two Taiwanese makers increased their market shares in China, the market shares held by South Korean manufacturers dropped.

For full 2011, CMO held an estimated 28 percent market share, and LG Display was in second place with about 26 percent. AUO and Samsung followed with some 19 percent and 18 percent, respectively.

China overtook the United States last year as the world's largest liquid crystal display (LCD) TV market.

South Korean panel makers have been seeking to strengthen their partnership with Chinese TV manufacturers and have planned to build new factories in the country.
