Fifteen fishery officers from 15 southern Pacific islands, including Fiji, Marshall Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Micronesia, Samoa and Solomon islands, stayed in Korea from August 20 to September 7 to participate in the fishery expert cultivation program, provided by the Fisheries HRD Center of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

They learned about the practical theory of fishery resource management and were also provided general information about Korea's fisheries-related businesses, deep-sea fishing, fishery farming and fisheries processing.

They visited not only fisheries-related facilities including the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute, Fisheries Resources Research Institute of South Gyeongsang Province and Busan International Fishery Market but also Korean companies and cultural heritage sites.

The Fisheries HRD Center plans to offer an educational program on processing and Hazard Analysis and Critical Points of fishery products for Asian and African fishery officers in October.

"The cultivation program was designed to ensure the safety of Korean deep sea tuna fishing vessels operating in the south Pacific Ocean. We believe the program for foreign fishery officers contributes to enhancing Korea's status as a leading country in the global fisheries management sector," said an official of the Fisheries HRD Center.
