Samsung Electronics Co., the world's No. 2 chipmaker, said Friday it has
successfully produced its first 14 nanometer test chip based on the FinFET
process.
The company succeeded in rolling out the test chip with four
partners, including British chipmaker ARM, Cadence, Mentor and Synopsis, Samsung
said in a press release.
FinFET technology, which uses a
three-dimensional process, enables efficient power usage compared with the
traditional planar process.
Samsung said it plans to cooperate with
the four partners to roll out products manufactured with the 14 nanometer FinFET
process.
"The 14-nano FinFET process will enhance the mobile
environment with higher device performance and lower power consumption," said
Choi Kyu-myung, an executive at Samsung's System Large Scale Integrated Circuit
unit.
