Chinese Tourists to Korea to Reach 63,000 in Mid-February
Date
2013.02.04
Chinese visitors to South Korea will likely reach 63,000 during the weeklong Lunar New Year holiday period, South Korea's state-run tourism agency said Monday.

The number of Chinese tourists from Feb. 9 to 15 will rise 25 percent from 50,400 during last year's Lunar New Year holidays, the Korea National Tourism Organization (KNTO) estimated.

The Lunar New Year, also known as the Chinese New Year, is one of the most important and festive holidays for Chinese people. The first day of this year's Lunar New Year falls on Feb. 11.

Chinese people have become the biggest spenders among foreign tourists in South Korea, helping generate revenue for South Korean retailers.

They are expected to spend at least 100 billion won (US$92 million) in South Korea over the seven days.

During last year's weeklong Chinese National Day holiday in October, some 125,000 Chinese tourists spent 270 billion won in the neighboring country.

South Korean officials said a boom in Korean pop culture, also known as "hallyu," in China has helped boost the number of Chinese tourists to South Korea.

The total number of Chinese tourists visiting South Korea stood at 2.84 million in 2012, up 27.8 percent from a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
