South Korea's outbound shipments of food and agricultural products surged 29 percent from a year earlier last month on a large increase in exports to China and Southeast Asian countries, the government said Thursday.

The country's food and agriculture exports reached an estimated US$654.9 million in January, compared with $507.8 million in the same month last year, according to the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Shipments of both fisheries products and processed goods jumped 40.3 percent and 28.3 percent on-year, respectively, with shipments of fresh foodstuff, such as vegetables, also growing 11.2 percent from a year earlier to $89.1 million.

By country, shipments to mainland China spiked 49.1 percent on-year to $115.6 million with exports to Hong Kong also surging 60.2 percent to $34.7 million.

Exports to Japan, the world's largest importer of South Korean farm products, gained 8.8 percent on-year to $181.2 million, with shipments to the 10 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations growing 44.2 percent from a year earlier to $95.5 million.

The ministry said the country's exports of farm products will continue to be weighed down by a global economic downturn and the expected appreciation of the local currency against hard currencies this year.

"The ministry expects exports of agricultural and fisheries products to continue facing great difficulties due to a global economic slowdown and the Korean won's appreciation, but will continue to strengthen its marketing efforts that are specific to each of the country's key and newly emerging markets," the ministry said in a press release.
