GE Healthcare Korea held a groundbreaking ceremony last Thursday for new ultrasound technology R&D and manufacturing facilities of GE Ultrasound Korea.

The GE Ultrasound Korea R&D center, which will have six floors on a 5,600 m2 site, will be developed by February of 2014 with an investment of more than KRW 10 billion. The company plans to double the production of ultrasound machines by 2017.

Chief Executive Officer and President of GE Healthcare Asia Pacific Akihiko Kumagai, Karl-Heinz Lumpi, General Manager of Women’s Health Ultrasound of GE Healthcare, Laurent Rotival, President and CEO of GE Healthcare Korea, and Choi Young-chun, General Manager of GE Ultrasound Korea, attended the groundbreaking ceremony.

GE Ultrasound Korea, which has seen 30 percent annual growth since 2009, is a core production base that manufactures one-third of GE Healthcare’s ultrasound machines.

General Manager Choi noted that the investment is the result of cooperative partnerships that GE Ultrasound Korea established with partnering small- and medium-sized companies, adding that the company will focus on contributing to the Korean government’s creative economy by fostering R&D experts and creating new jobs.
