MOTIE Discusses Korea-EU FTA
Date
2013.06.20

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) and the Korea International Trade Association (KITA) held a seminar on measures to facilitate the Korea-European Union (EU) free trade agreement (FTA) last Thursday.

Around 300 companies that export to EU countries and EU officials including an ambassador, head of the Delegation on the European Union to the Republic of Korea, attended the seminar.

Subjects presented at the seminar included measures to enter the EU market and businesses to focus on, reasons behind the success of strong and small German companies, outcomes of the Korea-EU FTA during the last two years and success cases of Korean companies in the EU market with the FTA.

Myung Jin-ho, a researcher at the Institute for International Trade of KITA, noted that Korea has shown better performance relative to China and Japan, despite slowed exports to the EU due to the European financial crisis.

Jung Jong-tae, Head of the European Headquarters of the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency, said large-scale logistics, global sourcing, energy conservation, environmental protection, mergers and acquisitions and public supply are promising industries in the EU market. He emphasized it is important to take advantage of opportunities with the spread of the Korean Wave and the Korea-EU FTA.

Gwon Pyung-oh, an official from the Office of International Trade and Investment of MOTIE, explained that the Korea-EU FTA has helped Korea greatly to facilitate FTAs, adding that Korea needs to penetrate the EU market actively as the EU is negotiating FTAs with China and Japan.

Customs agents from KITA, EU companies and others also participated in the consulting event that followed the seminar to provide consultation sessions for about 70 Korean companies interested in entering the EU market.
