According to Yonhap News,
(SEOUL = Yonhap News) The local content industry's 2012 sales increased more than 5 percent from a year earlier, led by movies, broadcasting programs and computer games, government data showed Friday.
Sales rose 5.2 percent to 87.27 trillion won (US$80.99 billion) in 2012, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said in an annual report released that day.
The content industry is an umbrella term encompassing publishers, broadcasters, advertisers and firms producing music, computer games, animations, movies, musicals and other creative content.
Sales advanced in all categories of the industry excluding publication and animation, the report said, adding that there was remarkable growth in sales of films, broadcasting programs and games.
Publishers and animation companies lost 0.7 percent and 1.4 percent in sales while film and broadcasting and game sales jumped 16.7 percent, 11.2 percent and 10.8 percent each.
Publishers represented the largest part of the industry's sales with 21.97 trillion won, followed by broadcasters (14.18 trillion won) and advertisers (12.48 trillion won), according to the report.
Exports increased 7.2 percent on-year to $4.61 billion thanks to jumps in exports of films (27.5 percent), music products (19.9 percent) and computer games (11 percent). Imports declined 9.4 percent to $1.67 billion, the report showed.
"Content exports have grown on an annual average of 18.5 percent for five years since 2008, influenced by the global boom of Korean pop culture, known as hallyu," the ministry said in a release.
