Korea and Germany Build Special Relationship Based on Shared Experiences

(SEOUL=Yonhap News) Korean President Park Geun-hye met with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on October 31 and said, “Korea and Germany have built a special relationship based on their sorrow of division and rapid development.”

President Park discussed measures to strengthen bilateral cooperation with Foreign Minister Steinmeier, who visited Korea to attend the First Korea-Germany Unification Advisory Panel.

“Korea and Germany have a very special relationship. The experiences that Germany has shared with us have become a strong foundation for not only the economic development of Korea but also the close relationship between the two countries,” continued Park.

"Germany is Korea’s largest trading partner and the third largest investor in Europe. We hope to boost the bilateral relationship in various sectors,” she said.

Foreign Minister Steinmeier asked President Park for her understanding of her being unable to meet her while visiting Germany last March due to the Ukraine crisis and said, "Korea and Germany have a traditionally friendly relationship.”

President Park visited Germany last March and announced the Dresden declaration for reunification. She also urged the strengthening of cooperation between the two countries, for the reunification of the Korean peninsula, at the Korea-Germany summit.

The Korea-Germany Unification Advisory Panel was established as a follow-up to the bilateral summit to share reunification experiences.
