According to Yonhap News,

(SEOUL=Yonhap News) The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP) announced March 11 that it will hold public hearings in Seoul (The K-Hotel) and Daejeon (Lotte City Hotel) on March 12 and 13, respectively, on recently established directions and standards for research and development (R&D) to be conducted by the government in 2016. The public hearings are for academic, industrial and research experts and anyone who is interested in R&D.

The government’s directions and standards for R&D investment will include its investment sectors, measures to increase efficiency and investment directions for each technology sector. The directions and standards will be used as an indicator for the allocation and adjustment of the MSIP’s budget and also for other ministries to establish their R&D budget plans for 2016.

The government, under an R&D direction to preemptively respond to the future by achieving a dynamic and innovative economy, has decided to invest in three core sectors: economic innovation, the public’s happiness and science and technology-based innovation.

In order to achieve economic innovation through R&D, the government will improve the fundamentals of the core industries through the technology capacity of small and medium-sized companies, innovation in the manufacturing industry and regional R&D capacity enhancement.

The government will also strive to secure safety against natural disasters and social infrastructure and improve public health and the living environment. It will expand investment in resolving emerging issues related to food, energy, an aging society and water shortages.

For science and technology-based innovation, the government will expand creative basic research and purpose-type convergence research and increase open collaboration between sectors and institutions.

Anyone can attend the public hearings without prior registration. For more information, please refer to the websites of the MSIP (http://www.msip.go.kr) and the Korea Institute of Science & Technology Evaluation and Planning (http://www.kistep.re.kr).
