According to Yonhap News,
(SEOUL=Yonhap News) Seoul City announced April 1 a plan to revitalize a Hongneung research complex by transforming Hongneung as a base for research and development (R&D) through cooperation with surrounding research institutions, hospitals and universities.
The city plans to develop the biomedical industry with the human resources and technologies of institutions near Hongneung, including two high-level general hospitals, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST) and the Korea Techno-Venture Foundation.
The city plans to turn the KREI building into a biomedical R&D base by 2016.
The biomedical R&D base is an open R&D center that will provide R&D support (translation research and technology transfer) and management support (patents, venture capitals and legal affairs) and nurture a skilled workforce through investor relations education and startup education.
The city will carry out city-oriented R&D projects and reduce rent for companies moving into the R&D base. It will also sign memorandums of understanding with marketing and legal advisory companies to support the use of joint research equipment and technology commercialization.
The city will also establish a biomedical R&D street along the Hoegi Street from 2017 to proactively attract biomedical companies and foreign research institutions. The goal is to create a bio cluster by cooperating with KIST, KAIST, Korea University and the Kyung Hee University Healthcare System.
"We will build a biomedical-centered industrial ecosystem by maximizing our use of the excellent infrastructure and human resources of Hongneung. We will also seek measures to increase the accessibility of the Hongneung research complex to contribute to the region," said a city official.
