Date
2015.08.04

According to Yonhap News,

(DAEJEON=Yonhap News) The Korean Intellectual Property Office and Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning announced the result of a patent analysis on Korea’s 13 future growth engines at the fifth special committee on future growth engines on July 23.

According to the analysis on 100,000 patents filed by four countries – Korea, the United States, Japan and the European Union – over the last 12 years, Korea ranked third for number of patents, following the United States (29.8 percent) and Japan (22.4 percent). It came in first in the smart internet of things (IoT) sector.

Korea’s average number of patent citations was 5.2, only 46 percent of that of the United States (11.3).

Korea’s patent acquisition rate from major countries was 10.6 percent, far less than that of the United States (35.9 percent) and Japan (31.4 percent).

In terms of the number of patent applications and patent acquisition rate from major countries, Korea’s technological competitiveness was strong for wearable smart devices and realistic contents but weak for tailored wellness care and convergence materials.

For 5G mobile communications and IoT, Korea’s Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) applied for the most patents.

For wearable smart devices, Korea’s Samsung Electronics, Samsung SDI, LG Chem and Samsung Electro-Mechanics were proactive in conducting patent activities, and startups in the United States applied for more patents for smartband and smart glass than they did previously.
